Professor of Social Policy awarded Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

Professor Ravinder Barn from the Department of Law and Criminology at Royal Holloway, University of London has been conferred the award of Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Professor Barn was elected in spring 2020 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to research and her application of social science to policy, education, society and the economy.

She is the 15th social scientist from Royal Holloway - serving and retired - to have been made a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. As a Professor of Social Policy in the Department of Law and Criminology, Ravinder is an author of eight books and has published over 100 journal papers. She regularly writes on gender, ethnicity, child and youth welfare, and criminal justice. Over the last 30 years or so, Professor Barn has been one of the leaders in the field of social sciences.

The Academy’s Fellowship is made up of distinguished individuals from academic, public and private sectors, across the full breadth of the social sciences. Through leadership, applied research, policymaking and practice, in 2020, Professor Barn, plus 50 others have worked to help understand and tackle some of the toughest challenges facing us in modern times. Their work has contributed to the UK’s position as a world leader in the social sciences.

Speaking about the accolade, Professor Ravinder Barn said: “It is a great honour to be conferred as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. The Academy’s mission is to promote social sciences for the public good and I welcome this recognition of my contribution to social policy and practice over the last three decades. I look forward to contributing to the work of the Academy in promoting the value and importance of social sciences in tackling the key societal challenges of our times.”
