This week, we get to know Daniel Steel, Senior Gardener. Daniel joined Royal Holloway in September 2023, and works with his team to manage the diverse range of habitats found across out Egham campus.

1.) Please tell us more about yourself and your role

Having started the role in September 2023 I have had a warm welcome to the University by all. My role as Senior Gardener is to manage the diverse range of site features from the horticultural displays to the woodlands, meadows and stream networks on our Egham campus. The estate’s grounds and mosaic of different habitats means there is always a lot to focus on, and consciously manage the mounting impacts of Climate and Biodiversity changes.

2.) As a new staff member at the University, what are you enjoying most in your role so far?

The University's grounds are fantastically diverse keeping the works varied and interesting, with a knowledgeable and hardworking team. It has been great meeting the estates and academic teams across campus, there really is a wealth of knowledge and passion within the organisation.

3.) What are you looking to achieve in your role over the next six months?

Having been in post almost six months, the next six will be learning the grounds more intimately, it takes at least one year to understand how the site develops though the natural seasons. I am very much looking forward to the renowned spring daffodil displays.

4.) What or who inspires you inside and/or outside of work?

It has been moving to hear how so many students, alumni and staff fondly recall their enjoyable experiences of the grounds as, a beautiful and fundamental part of their time here.

5.) How do you like to spend your free time outside of work?

When I get a moment I enjoy a bit of whittling and woodwork, but mainly spending time with my family.
